Therapy vs. Coaching
Therapy and coaching can both support healthier relationships, but they serve different purposes. The right fit depends on what you want help with and the level of clinical support you need.
Therapy
Therapy is clinical mental health care. It may be the better fit when relationship concerns are connected to anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional distress, or patterns that are significantly affecting daily life.
Therapy may include:
Assessment and diagnosis when appropriate
Trauma and attachment work
Support for anxiety, depression, or emotional distress
Deeper work around longstanding relational patterns
Treatment planning and clinical support
Therapy is available to clients located in Utah.
Coaching
Coaching is educational, practical, and skills-based. It may be the better fit when the focus is understanding relationship patterns, improving communication, building stronger habits, and creating more intentional ways of relating.
Coaching may include:
Relationship and attachment education
Communication and conflict skills
Identifying blind spots and recurring patterns
Boundaries, follow-through, and accountability
Practical tools and clear action steps
Structured practice between sessions
Coaching is not psychotherapy and does not include diagnosis, trauma treatment, or mental health treatment.

Therapy is clinical mental health care and may include assessment, diagnosis, trauma treatment, and support for anxiety, depression, and relational concerns. Therapy services are provided by Jennifer Middleton, MA, LCMHC, and are available only to clients located in Utah at the time of service, unless otherwise permitted by law.
Coaching is educational and skills-based and does not include psychotherapy, diagnosis, trauma treatment, or crisis care. If you are unsure which option is the best fit, we can discuss that during a consultation.
